How to choose the best wedding dress for your body type
So, you are searching for ‘the one’… No, we don’t mean your partner, we are talking about the perfect wedding dress. With countless gorgeous gowns out there, it can be a bit of a challenge narrowing down the perfect dress. Not to worry, we are here to help! Here’s the golden rule – try and find a dress that flatters and totally works for your body type, helping you to look your best on the special day.
You are a pear shape if you have wider hips than your shoulders or bust, with a defined waist.
The perfect dress for you will highlight your beautiful waistline and keep the focus on the stunning bodice. This means fit-and-flare dresses are an ideal choice! A-Line dresses will be your best friend, and ball gowns would do the same!
If you have a small frame and around 5ft or under, you have a petite body type. Avoid swamping yourself with too much materials and keep it simple (yes, that means avoid ball gowns). Find dresses that will give the illusion of elongating rather than shortening. That means avoid tea length dresses that can shorten your legs, but embrace simple lines and strapless designs.
Also known as apple shape, your body is voluptuous with a full build and thin legs. The perfect dress will work well with and embrace your curves. Avoid ball gowns, and start embracing sheath and figure-hugging mermaid gowns. V-shape necklines are particularly flattering, showing and supporting your full bust. If you are not looking a full-length dress, your shape is also the perfect type for a tea length dress, as it accentuates the waist and shows off your legs.
If you have balanced bust and hip with a small waste, you are an hourglass shape. The main goal in finding a dress for your shape is to accentuate your tiny waist! Mermaid and sheath work beautifully for your shape, or you can show off your waist while hiding your hips in a big ball gown!
Your shape is straight with no defined waist. With the typical model stature, it is very easy to find a gown for your body shape. Sheath dresses follows your natural body lines beautifully, or embrace an A-line or ball gown to give the illusion of a smaller waist.
If you have wider shoulders or upper body than your hips, then you have an inverted triangle shape. Avoid puffed sleeves, high necklines, strapless and off shoulders as they can widen your upper body. Instead wear sleeves or choose a dress with deep U or V necklines. Ball gowns and A-line gowns are perfect for you, as they provide beautiful symmetry.
We hope these little tips and tricks help you find the perfect dress. In the end, just go for that dress that make you feel amazing – rules are made to be broken!
